How To Buy a Second Hand (Used) Mobility Scooter In 6 Steps

Article by Jeff Williams

A lot of older folks and other with debilitating conditions have thought about buying a mobility scooter to increase their independence and freedom. To save money on tight budgets, they are starting to increasingly look at the second hand mobility scooter market where substantial savings are possible.

Most things worth doing like purchasing good used equipment need more than one step to achieve success. Complex projects that involve significant dollar outlays take time, preparation and staying with it through numerous stages over an extended time period. Aiming to buy a good second hand mobility scooter isn’t any exception.

Here’s how to successfully purchase a good used mobility scooter in six easy steps.

Step 1. Do Your Research. This will be important because you will need to know which scooter make and model you should be on the outlook to purchase. Visit scooter dealer shops and do some test drives. Read Product reviews from sites like Amazon.com to see what users are saying about any mobility scooter models that you are interested in. In the event you skip or ignore this step, you really won’t know what is available and what pitfalls to avoid.

Step 2. Determine Your Search Strategy. This can be a very crucial step which demands a well conceived plan and persistent followup. Evaluate your potential sources. Consider local mobility scooter dealer shops, classified ads from your local paper as well as those in the next largest “Big City”, or online auction sites like Ebay. You might even consider placing your own ad for a particular model.

The reason that this so significant is that although the used mobility scooter market is growing, you want as many potential options available so you can select the scooter model that has the accessories and features that you desire. The more options you have the sooner you can find your scooter and start to enjoy it.

Step 3. Locate Your Scooter. What we are doing here is following up routinely with all of our possible sources. Do a phone interview first before going to inspect your potential scooter purchase to make sure it what you desire. No need to waste time and gas going to see a model that does meet your requirements. This step will require lots of patience.

Step 4. Inspect the Second Hand Mobility Scooter. Let’s go into more detail and elaborate on this a little, You want to make sure you check the batteries, tires, and ground clearance.

Do a test drive if at all possible so you can experience the scooter’s pickup power and braking capability. Check to see if a warranty is still available from the manufacturer and if so, what is the process for getting it transferred.

Step 5. Negotiate Your Best Price. If you have done your research properly in step 1, you should know what a price range a new scooter would be for a model with similar features. I would recommend an opening bargaining price of 30 -50% of the new price if I was purchasing from an individual and slightly higher if from a dealer. If you are working with a scooter dealer, ask if they would get you a short warranty like 6 months so it will at least partially offset the higher price. After you have looked at several second hand scooters you will get a good feel for what the market is in your area.

Step 6. Take Delivery. You will need to arrange to transport your scooter home. If you don’t have a truck or van large enough to transport, then you may need a mobility scooter carrier. The seller may have one or you can find these used also as well. Even with truck, depending on the size, you may need a scooter ramp to get the scooter into the truck bed. Obviously, if it is shipped, the task is easier to get it to your address, but don’t forget you to include the shipping costs when negotiating pricing in step 5 above.

By now you have a good idea about how to proceed with purchasing a second hand mobility scooter. If you follow these simple six steps you will reach your goal.

iI looked this up for you in the yellow pages, but couldn’t find a place that rents scooters, only electric wheel chairs. However, here are a few numbers and addresses of the bigger places:
