How To Choose A Pediatric Power Wheelchair

Article by Jed Baguio

The first word people usually think of is pity when they see a child who is confine on a wheelchair. Perhaps the child is helpless but that is not what he/she needs. He/She needs support and consideration and not sympathy.

It is also important that parents should consider their children’s mobility and independence. These children for sure want to be treated as normal but may not be open about their feelings at all times. Parents should be sensitive about this. They must provide their children independence by choosing the right wheelchair for them.

The right wheelchair and most suitable for children is a pediatric power wheelchair. It is propelled by electricity and used with the help of belt and gears.

These wheelchairs are often expensive. There are 3 essential models available and they are:

1. Rear-wheel drive wheelchairsThe most popular and move faster but are difficult for turning.

Front-wheel drive wheelchairsIt has tighter turning capabilities and has slightly lower top pace compared to the rear-wheeled since they have the tendency to turn very fast.

Mid-wheel drive wheelchairsThis has the tightest turning capabilities of all the three models and tend to be unsteady when the user is about to stop or start.

One of the most common concerns is the transportation and once it is solved many children will have a great benefit from using it. The only solution to this is to choose for a lighter wheelchair with detachable hardware. Other concern includes lifestyle, terrain and the surroundings. Ask yourself any of these questions if possible:

* Can your child be able to use the wheelchair at school?* What did the doctor tell you about his or her needs?* Will your child be comfortable with the wheelchair you like?* What does your child want?

It will be easier for you to choose the kind of wheelchair for your child if you can find answers to these questions.

The best one should be the wheelchair which can grow with your child if we talked about practicality. This is an adjustable wheelchair.

Maintenance of the wheelchair should be observed regularly.. It should be washed, cleaned, and sprayed thoroughly with a cleaner and a careful check up should be done at least once a week. This can make sure that your child is safe and protected at all times.

Question by Jenster: ever fly with a power wheelchair? Whats the best airline?
Going across the U.S. for a data study on my disability. I book the flight, they re-imberse me. Never flown with my chair. What do I need to know and which airline do you recommend?
Thanks

Answer by S P
Airline usually has nothing to do with it. It is the airport that is the one that causes the issues. If you can’t walk at all, make sure when you make reservations that you tell them you need an aisle chair to get you to the seat. When you get to the airport, go to the airline desk and tell them the same thing when you check in. Then go to your gate and tell them at the gate the same thing. The wheelchair will go underneath and it should be ok. If it isn’t then you will need to file an accident report with the airline. Accidents with wheelchairs happen all the time.

SP is right it is the airport that may cause the problem, not the airline. Some internationalairports can not seemto get it right (Orly-France was a headache) but domestically should not be a problem. Do book an aisle chair well ahead though.

When I first read this I thought you were joking, like, someone putting wings on it or going so fast it lifted off the ground. Not much help but I’ll star it for you. ;)
