Manual And Power Wheelchairs: A Brief Look

Article by Quinlanmurray

A device that aids a person in navigating from place to place, especially when he is in a handicapped condition is the wheelchair. For those patients who are on strict bed rest and need to have minimum mobility, using the wheelchair is the best option. Therefore, you see manually operated models being used maximally in hospitals and clinics. For patients who are advised to permanently refrain from movement and walking, automated models come as a great boon.

So what would you purchase, if someone in your house is in a similar need? How would you go about selecting the model best suited for him or her? Well, here are a few tips that might help you make the right choice. Firstly, if the requirement is for a short while then you should go for manual rehab models. This occurs when a patient is suffering from a disability that prevents him from undertaking active movement for a certain period of time. So he will need a wheelchair for the duration that he needs to recover from the illness.

A manually operated device not only costs less than its automated counterparts, but is also much lighter in weight. This of course, is attributed to the fact that the power engine and motor that is solely responsible for increasing the weight of power wheelchairs, is absent in manually operated models. All you need to do while purchasing the manual design is make sure that the device is well suited to your patient.

The seat position is an important decider of the comfort of the patient. The mechanical efficiency of the manually operated device will be at its best only when the right position is maintained. So you will need to take the advice of medical therapists who will ascertain for you the ideal model types.

If the patient needs to stay on a wheelchair for a very long duration, then you need to purchase a power model that runs in battery automation. These models cost higher and are much heavier than the traditional manual models. But this does not negate the unique advantages of these models. Main advantage of operating a power driven model is the fact that the user himself can operate and control his movements. The directional efficiency of the control brake actually enhances the active life of the patient.

Therefore, a person will be able to take part in all the activities that a normal person indulges in, even though he might be permanently assigned the wheelchair. San Diego and Orange County residents need to go for models that suit their requirements and are cost effective. This way they will be able to make recovery of the patient easier and faster!

Question by flacowww: MANUAL WHEELCHAIR REPAIR HELP?
ok well i am in a wheelchair and do my own repairs for the most part(as long as my dad doesnt get to it first and insist on doing it) i have all the right size tools in metric but i want to narrow it down so i can not carry as much and for the main wheels after you pop it off is 2 nuts about an inch wide and i just use a vise grip and adjustable pliers, now i want to stop with that and just get the right size box wrench. The problem is i cant just take the nut off and bring it to home depot so im hoping someone with better knowledge can help mw out. ALSO MORE IMPORTANTLY WHAT IS A GOOD LUBRICANT FOR THE WHEELS AND 8 INCH CASTER WHEELS! i know not to use wd40 for lube and if it helps my wc hardware is metric.
I want a lube that stands up to humidity,water,grit/sand(i spend time down the shore) and cold weather so things dont get brittle and grind.
Can i switch between lubes can i use graphite lube in summer while im outdoors more and then use the other from october to spring to
time when im mostly indoors or will the alternating of lube cake up or something?

Honestly, wd40 is not a lubricant really- its for displacing water hence “water displacement code 40″.

If you want something thats long lasting than use a white lithium grease or even a chassis grease for cars.

If you find the areas that get dirty quickly and get alot of sand in it, than you want to use a dry lubricant… Best is probably a graphite

The only way to find out what size the nut is, is to try different sockets till you find the size… All wheel chair nuts are different.

Received product that was suppose to be new but did not appear new. Sent the product back after calling and emailing to Best Priced Products. They offered to refund my money which was $724. After the first week I called in and left a message and also left a message on their email. It has now been almost 2 weeks and I still have not received a refund for the product. The company has not returned my calls or emails.

You can put a crescent wrench on the nut and then measure how big a gap it has between the jaws to get the proper wrench size. Home centers sell “dogbone” wrenches by Craftsman, Black and Decker and others that have multiple sockets on them that fit metric or US nuts that might help in carrying an assortment all in one…run around 25.00. but it depends how large the nut is…make sure the wrench can accomodate it. Metric sizes are often comparable to US sizes…25 MM = 1 inch 13 M = 1/2 inch 19 MM = 3/4 inch and so on. There are also adjustable jaw wrenches on the market that grip without having to rotate a thumbwheel to get the right size like a Crescent wrench….the harder you turn, the tighter they get. A couple sizes fit a variety of bolt or nut heads.

As for lube, a good lithium-based grease will deter water and humidty but greases attract/hold dirt , sand and debris and get stiff in cold temps. A chain lube based on graphite or other dry lubes might be better.
