Manual wheelchair: A boon for those who are physically impaired
As the name implies, a wheelchair is a chair with wheels. It was invented somewhere around 1670 in England to aid movement of people who were unable to walk either because of any disability or weakness in limbs. It is indeed a great invention as it has helped all those physically impaired to move without the assistance of others. Manual wheelchair consists of the mainframe which has two large wheels and armrests, a footrest and two small wheels in front. It can be moved pushing rims with the help of hands and comes fitted with manual breaks. Any person who is unable to walk but still has some power in his arms can make use of a wheelchair. The entire effort in propelling a wheelchair comes through the hands and upper body of the person sitting on it. However, for the aid of people who have difficulty with their hands as well, there is a version that uses electric power and no effort whatsoever is required on the part of the person sitting on the wheelchair.
A manual wheelchair is nothing less than a boon for those with physical impairment as it gives them a feeling of independence and they do not depend on the help of others for their movement from one place to another. With its help, even a disabled person can lead an active life. Manual wheelchair wheels are so designed that they make the wheelchair move with the slightest of effort on the part of the person sitting on the chair. The front wheels are mainly for support and balance and this is why they are very small in comparison to the main wheels. Manual wheelchair wheels are fitted with tires and tubes just like a bicycle and need air filling to make the chair glide smoothly.
If you are disabled and unable to walk, a wheelchair is probably the best thing for you. Today there are many models of wheelchairs available in the market, each with its own features. You need to keep in mind your own peculiar circumstances and requirements in mind before finalizing a wheelchair. It is advisable to not only sit, but also take a test ride so that you know whether you are comfortable sitting and moving the chair around. See that you are at ease with its functions and features, and you exert no extra pressure while moving in the wheelchair.
Despite all the innovations in the manual wheelchair, the basic model continues to be the most popular because of the simplicity of design and ease of use. It is also preferred as trouble shooting is easy and if any problem arises, the next door mechanic who handles the problems of bicycles can easily fix it. These days, it is possible to get a customized wheelchair made for a person. This implies that any disabled person need not use the standard wheelchairs available in the market. He can order the manufacturing company to make a special wheelchair for himself so that he is comfortable driving it rather than having to make do with what is available in the market.

I live in Toronto Canada, and am interested in renting a wheelchair for a few days. How much would it cost and also, where should i get it? I dont care if it is used.. Thank you
PS: I’m really cheap, i dont need it to be in good condition. I just need it for a short part in a film, and it does not need to go fat or anything, and it doesnt need to be very durable.

Curt, ask at the hospital, there may be a place that has loners for you to use. That’s where I got my wheel chair when I broke my ankle and I had free use of it for over 3 months.

Lightweight, easy to use, lots of features,
Drive Wheelchair
I purchased this wheelchair not knowing it would fold together, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it did. You simply lift it up by the canvas seating pad and everything collapses. The leg rests also fold aside very easily and the armrests fold up and out of the way so you can slide onto your bed. I tested the maneuverability and it fits into narrow passages and doorways (even ones found in homes that were made in the 1950s). Turning, moving forward, and backwards takes some getting used to if you haven’t used a wheelchair. The controls are similar to that of a tracked vehicle in that you control turning and movement via the individual wheels. Or you can have someone just push you around. The wheelchair wasn’t very heavy for me, I could lift it around without any difficulty. The shipping was extremely fast and kudos to Amazon for the excellent service. I tried ordering a wheelchair via a medical supply store and they gave me the run around for well over a month. I ordered this chair from Amazon and it arrived within 2 days as guaranteed.
Unfortunately, the packaging wasn’t very sufficient. There wasn’t any packing material to protect the chair, and the box already fell apart by the time it arrived. The OEM should consider more robust protection.
Pros: Easy to use, lots of features, affordable
Cons: Packaging isn’t that great, it could use more protection and better box securements.
Overall: 5/5

|GREAT product, but BEWARE!! Way heavier!,
This wheelchair is wonderful. The quality was great, and we thought it would be much less ‘heavy duty’ because of the price. It rolls really easy. However, it weighs over 4o lbs. Check the Drive website and it will tell you the true weight of the wheelchair. If you are looking for a lightweight product, this is the same as other wheelchairs. It’s still a very nice product though!

My father suffered from a stroke so we had to rent a chair similar to this for $90 a month … imagine.
Bought this chair cause of the movable arm rests & price.
Its simply great , I dont think you can ask for anything more on a normal wheel chair, highly recommend it.
