Question by just4fun: Can you use a car battery in a 12volt power wheelchair ?
The batteries in the chair are dead and my wife comes home from hospital tom’w. No time to get ones made for power wheelchairs.

You could use one temporarily but it’s not a good permanent solution.
Car batteries aren’t intended for deep discharge so you won’t get a long service life from one. The acid inside is liquid instead of gelled so there is a safety issue if the battery is tipped for any reason. Car batterys may also release fumes that can corrode nearby electronics over time.

This is a good hitch hauler at a great price. Assembly was mostly easy, however there were a couple of holes that didn’t quite line up properly, nothing a little grinding with the dremmel wasn’t able to fix. While it is a little annoying to have to fix small manufacturing errors like that, for the price of this unit, vs the prices of every other one I’d been able to find I’m still very happy with it.
As far as function goes, my parents have used it several times and are very pleased with it. My mothers powerchair loads easily and the rack has plenty of tie down points available. It even includes pre-drilled holes for mounting your license plate to since the chair will likely obscure it.

|A car battery will work for a while but a marine deep cycle battery would last longer.
You should be able to get Group 22 or Group 24 (the common small and large size wheelchair batteries) deep discharge batteries in any good battery store, even Walmart. They are often used on snowmobiles, etc.
Deep discharge sealed ‘gel pack’ batteries would be a safer investment than car batteries.
