Terrain wheelchairs

Article by Mr. Kishor Batra & Mr. Manish Batra

Terrain wheelchairs travel where standard conventional wheelchairs will bog down, including over gravel, grass, in water and through sand and ice! They are available in electric power and manual models. People with strong upper body strength often prefer manual all terrain or sports models specially designed to suit their favorite outdoors lifestyle.

Wheelchairs have come a long way. No longer are they simply a useful device for those with limited or no mobility to get from one place to another. Wheelchair improvements are being made each day from new designs in sport wheelchairs to amazing all terrain wheelchairs. Any improvement, no matter how small, which increases the safety of a person in a wheelchair, is a great improvement.

Terrain wheelchairs available as both manual and power chairs though they are typically miles apart in cost. Manual all terrain wheelchairs are relatively cheap while electric power wheelchairs are very expensive. I think my next upgrade will be to an all terrain powerchair as I love the beach. The problem with many 4×4 powerchairs is size. They are difficult to navigate a standard house in – forget hallway u-turn’s – the wide tyres stick and mark tiled floors and they screw up carpet and mats. The extra wide tires distribute the weight of the wheelchair and person and therefore making it easier to push through many different environments, including water. All terrain wheelchairs give you the flexibility of complete off-road movements in villages, at the beach or lake, in parks and camping.

Terrain Wheelchairs: Built for outdoor use, these powerchairs can handle almost any surface you’ll likely encounter on a daily basis. Rugged Terrain power wheelchairs have rear, front and mid wheel drive options, larger wheels and are designed to provide a smooth ride over rough terrain and up some inclines. Larger motors and longer frames allow an increase of torque over standard electric wheel chairs.Terrain Wheelchair should be able to go just about anywhere. Whether you have to contend with the elements of rain, ice, or snow, a well-functioning wheelchair should be able to get you where you need to go. This also applies to grass, sand, dirt paths, slopes, stairs, curbs and other obstacles that can be encountered either in- or outdoors. Any all terrain style wheelchair should be more than able to handle these with relative ease.

The chair looks much a like a normal power wheelchair except for the set up of the wheelchairs, they have 6 wheels with 4 behind and two in front. The four number of wheels mounted at the back of the wheelchair are the big difference in making the wheelchair climb. The wheels have an electric lift which allows the other wheels to climb over the others like a stair flight or maybe a kerb. Another good feature of climbing wheelchairs is that the four rear wheels work as 4 wheel drive.http://www.wheelchairindia.com

Question by bananas_r_bad: Is there any wheelchair accessible accommodation in Sweden?
One of our adult clients (who has Cerebral Palsy) is travelling to Sweden in June and needs help sourcing accommodation in Stockholm and Ekero, all he needs is a 1 bed room that can accommodate his manual wheelchair, he will not be travelling with a carer.

If you have any information we can pass onto him it would be appreciated.

Thanks

James

I’m not sure if you saw the section on the official tourist info site for Sweden. It has good links and advice for not only links to find hotel accomodation, but also Wheelchair rental, wheelchair accessible restuarants, museums, cinemas, theatres & cultural walking tours http://www.visitsweden.com/sweden/Sweden-Facts/How-you-do-things-in-Sweden/Disabled-travellers/

For accomodation it gives two links to find suitable accomodation

http://www.stayinsweden.com/search.details.aspx – where you can click the box for wheelchair accessible accomodation in the advanced search section

Hope this helps

Yes, you’ll have no problem in that, there are plenty of hotels that have rooms for guests with that kind of needs. You can google or get your travel agency to check that.

As for Ekerö, it’s not far from Stockholm, so I suppose you’ll be staying in Stockholm and taking a taxi there. You can always book a taxi especially designed for wheelchairs. Try with Taxi Stockholm, both for transfers from/to the airport as well as other trips. Click on the British flag for the English version
