The electric-powered wheelchair was invented during World War 2 and it has become very popular nowadays because it offers excellent freedom of movement to its users.
Another type of wheelchairs is a sport wheelchair, which has a streamlined design to provide agility and speed. Common wheelchair sports are basketball, rugby, tennis, and racing. A sport wheelchair is non-folding to maintain its strength, has a pronounced angle for the wheels to provide stability on turning, and lightweight. This wheelchair is not for daily use, although some people prefer to use it everyday.
The development of the wheelchair advances rapidly following the development in technology. Today, high-tech wheelchairs have been invented and perhaps the most famous one is iBot. Nowadays public are more aware towards people who are confined in wheelchairs. Why I still see manual wheelchairs everywhere
Perhaps you are wondering about this because obviously you feel that electric-powered wheelchair is much more convenient for its user rather than the manual one. However, even in todays advanced world, manual wheelchair is still needed in certain situations. You might be surprise, but some people just do not like technology and prefer to use the old reliable manual wheelchair. They are happy with it and do not feel the needs to use electric-powered wheelchair.
Manual wheelchairs are also useful for people who need to use wheelchairs on a temporary basis. A condition like a sprained ankle or a broken leg will only confine a person in a wheelchair for a few weeks or months. Since it is only temporary, it is unnecessary for that person to buy an expensive electric-powered wheelchair. A manual wheelchair will work fine during their recovery period.
A manual wheelchair is also a good option in the case of emergency. Perhaps you have seen on TV repeatedly how a woman, who is going into labor, is placed in a wheelchair and brought into her room. As you can see, manual wheelchairs are perfect for emergency situations that happen only in a very short duration.
The last reason is cost. An electric-powered wheelchair can cost a considerable amount of money and not everyone can afford to buy it. For these people, manual wheelchairs are the best alternative for them. Although an electric-powered wheelchair is more affordable these days, especially due to financial supports by organizations like Medicare, a person who is in financial trouble will definitely choose the cheapest option and that is a manual wheelchair.

Question by JDog_90305: Why is a wheelchair escort necessary for patients being discharged from a medical facility?
I understand that wheelchair escorts are necessary for all patients being discharged? Why is this if the patient is ambulatory?

I suppose if the patient is ambulant, they may be at risk of collapsing still or something like that. Hospitals have a tendancy to discharge people before they’re fully recovered… (from my own experience).
The escort is probably so that the wheelchair is not recklessly driven by a relative causing injury to others or stolen or something like that. Those things are expensive and are easily replaced. I bet if you looked through their stats, hundreds go missing each year.

Great support but very slippery,
I got this cushion for my dad to use in his wheelchair and in regular arm chairs. It is great in the wheelchair. Super comfortable, very dense gel cushion which really distributes the weight well. The cushion itself is surprisingly heavy and has a handle loop on the side to help carry it. The bottom of the cushion has a slightly rubbery feel which helps it grip the chair and keeps it from shifting, while the blue top cover is more like a windbreaker material which is very slippery so it is easy for him to shift his weight. HOWEVER, when this cushion is in a regular chair, as he leans a bit over the table to eat, the cushion compresses so his butt starts to slide forward. For now, we will only be using this in his wheelchair – but it is a great cushion.

Great seat cusion. Got one for my mom and she loves it. Was just suppose to be for sporting events but she uses it around the house too. Heavy duty feeling, you can tell there is a lot of gel material inside.

My wife had to spend some time in a wheelchair following a complex surgery; the weeks that she used the chair, we learned a lot about cushioning, especially for heavier individuals ( she is just over 6 feet tall ) and THIS cushion relieved pressure points, made the chair a lot more comfortable and avoided any contact near the area of the surgery.
Since we needed it for a temporary application, we did not really want to spend a hundred dollars or more for some of the long-term silicone or air-cushions that are most useful for paras, quads or diabetics. This one fit our needs perfectly, and at a very reasonable price. Delivery was fast, too.

I suppose, so the patient is escorted safely off the hospital grounds
and is seen to go to proper transport – rather than walk off down the road without assistance
